UNDERGROUND RAILROAD SERIES Gail and Ken Henshaw Collection |

Artist’s Statement This adventure began in the fall of 2004 during an Art in Education residency at Trigg Community School in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. My experience with the students produced the Underground Railroad Mural, a visual narrative based on the history of the Dismal Swamp Canal. Hence, the natural environment in North Carolina has taken me on a new journey in my artistic exploration. The history of the Great Dismal Swamp Canal with connections to the Underground Railroad exemplifies values and beliefs that inspired energies for this new series: Passage: Echoes of the Great Dismal Swamp. In this series, I explored North Carolina’s natural forms, beauties, mysteries and historic realities with the elements of color, space and texture to express my fascination with structured improvisation and poetic metaphors. My approach to these paintings is technically complex as they are spatially; they epitomize a celebration of artistic freedom.
